The Job of a Counselor and Specialist
Camp operates for nine weeks (June 23 - August 22, 2008). Prior to the start of camp, you will be
involved in an intensive orientation process. Your training will involve some midweek and
weekend days (approximately 40 hours) prior to camp. You will receive additional compensation
for this time. Our objectives during pre-camp training are to orient you to your job, provide you
with the necessary skills and training, introduce you to your co-workers and prepare you for your
exciting summer at Tumbleweed Day Camp (TW).

- As a TW Counselor, you will obtain a Class B driver's license with a Passenger endorsement,
complete our driver training program, (approximately 20 hours) and drive a bus or van. Camp
operates Monday through Friday and some staff will start as early as 7:00 A.M. or finish as late
as 6:00 P.M. You will also be required to stay on two overnights during the summer, for which you
will receive extra compensation. Our few non-driving positions are reserved for staff who cannot
drive. Preference for these positions is given to returning staff. These staff members will
serve as bus riders, assisting the driver as appropriate.
- Tumbleweed has high expectations for its staff. Our counselors have completed at least one
year of college and most are at least 19 years of age. They are strong leaders who have
experience working with children ages 4-14 and skills in camp related activities. Counselors
accept the responsibility of being an at-camp parent and friend, ensuring the emotional and
physical well-being of all children at camp, and planning the best possible program for
their group. The camp, of course, will provide you with guidance, help, ongoing training and
support. Your summer at TW will not be a vacation, but you will make lasting friendships, have
lots of fun, and feel a tremendous amount of job satisfaction.
- Specialist - Tumbleweed has even higher expectations of specialists, because they teach a specialized activity to our campers. Our specialists provide a highly enriched program for our campers by sharing their knowledge and experience in swimming, horseback riding, arts & crafts, creative play, video making, nature studies, rock climbing, and ropes course. Specialists must be knowledgeable about current instruction and safety techniques.
- Please note we are a day camp in West Los Angeles and do not provide housing. If you choose to apply, you will be fully responsible for securing your own housing for the summer and transportation to/from camp.
