tumbleweed XL

Welcome to Outdoor After "School"!

While this year hasn’t been an easy one, you already know what an incredible impact the Tumbleweed experience has made on your child. With that in mind, and with schools closed for in-person learning for the foreseeable future, we’re excited to extend the camp love with TumbleweedXL, our after-”school” camp starting in September.

We’re excited to be able to offer this opportunity to you this year. As parents, we know that the choices for our kids this year are pretty slim, and we hope that TumbleweedXL can make for a more engaging, deeper learning experience for your child (and an easier year for you!).

our groups

campers are grouped by grade with up to 11 other children and 2 counselors. in order to maintain a safe cohort, campers and staff do not mix with other groups.

TWXL offers the same great summer activities as well as enrichment programs to supplement your child's school education.

safe cohorts

campers must register for an entire session (4 weeks). our program is designed so that groups to not mix or share resources

we follow and maintain the strictest safety guidelines as developed by the LA County Department of Public Health. learn more in our FAQs.

all outdoors

we are able to provide a low-risk environment since our whole program is outdoors! TWXL is a great way to give your child lots of outdoor time each day.

we're in this together

we get it - this year has been too hard. it takes a village to raise a child. let's be that village together and raise each other up.

FAQs About TumbleweedXL

What is TumbleweedXL?

TumbleweedXL provides expanded learning after “school” to our campers through outdoor play, social-emotional learning, and discovery-based academic enrichment, using all that Tumbleweed has to offer. With their grade-level groups, campers engage in a mix of traditional camp activities and new projects aligned to the learning outcomes for their grade. A typical day might include some archery, a nature journaling session to work on language arts, exploring STEM through model rocketry, and a game of gaga. Through each week and each session, campers explore new projects and build new friendships.

Tell me more about the academics…

TumbleweedXL’s curriculum is being designed by credentialed teachers to supplement the learning outcomes for each grade, including project-based learning and activities supporting language arts, math, science, social studies, engineering, art, music, and more. We have a heavy focus on nature and ecology, just like at camp.

What’s the schedule?

TumbleweedXL is offered Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 pm, in four-week sessions beginning September 8. In order to comply with LA County’s health officer order and day camp directives to limit exposure and keep campers in small and consistent cohorts, all campers must enroll for all five days per week for all four weeks of a session. It’s just $1600 per session (or about $80 per day). We’ll also be offering an hour of homework help/tutoring from 5 to 6 pm, as an optional add-on.

We love the traditional camp activities! Will my child get to do those, too?

Yes! The XL day has a balance between traditional activities and academic enrichment. So, we’ll be doing all your child’s favorite activities, all at Tumbleweed North, including archery, ropes course, gaga, hiking, crafts, nature center, and even swimming a few times each week (weather permitting).

What about health and safety?

Just like with summer camp, TumbleweedXL is 100% outdoors. In addition to requiring consistent enrollment to keep our groups small and consistent, we’ll be following all of LA County’s day camp directives regarding face coverings (all the time!), physical distancing, cleaning, and everything else that’s keeping us as safe as possible this summer.

What if I need to cancel after I enroll?

When you enroll, you’ll pay a 25% deposit to reserve your spot, and the balance will be due the week before your session starts. You may cancel at any time prior to the Monday before your session starts and receive a full refund.

What if camp has to close?

2020’s been the year of uncertainty. If we’re required to close by LA County’s health officer order, you’ll receive a prorated refund based on how many days remain in your enrolled session.

What if I can’t commit to Monday through Friday for an entire session?

LA County’s day camp directives require us to keep groups as small and consistent as possible, and requiring this consistency is the safest way for us to enroll campers for this program.

What does my child need each day?

All you need to send each day is closed-toed shoes, a refillable water bottle, sunscreen and a snack. Please ensure your child eats lunch before coming to camp! You’ll also need to send a swimsuit and towel on swimming days (schedule TBA).
